Get Debt Consolidation Help with Knee Deep Trouble
Staff - Mortgage Lenders Plus.com
If you’re knee deep in debt and feel overwhelmed, there are a number of options for seeking assistance. Debt consolidation help is only one of the steps that a professional can provide; other necessary components will certainly include a budget and a change in spending habits. Some credit counseling agencies also take the process a step further, into a debt management plan in which the agency plays an active role.

Debt consolidation is a relatively easy financial process if you own a home and can take out a home equity loan or home equity line of credit. These options will lower the interest rate you are paying on your debt: simply pay off the credit cards that have high interest rates and begin making payments on your loan or credit line. Keep in mind, however, that you have not lowered your debt by a penny – you have simply transferred it into a new loan, a loan that probably had some substantial origination costs as well.

You can help yourself with the debt consolidation process by contacting your creditors and talking with them about your credit problems. The last thing any of them want to see is total failure; most will be willing to renegotiate a payment plan although they won’t renegotiate interest rates. One of the tricks in the debt consolidation counseling trade is to negotiate an extended plan on, say, an auto loan that will free up some money each month to pay down your most expensive short term credit.

The agencies that provide debt consolidation help will always tell you to pay off the most expensive credit cards first and make minimum payments on the others until you’ve done so. Debt consolidation agencies such as Credit Counseling Inc. will, if you feel it is necessary, develop a debt management plan and take charge of paying off your monthly bills – you simply send them a single check. Some of these agencies may also be able to negotiate reductions in large credit obligations. Many call themselves non-profit organizations.

Some are also marginal operators. In the words of the Federal Trade Commission, “But be aware that, just because an organization says it’s “nonprofit,” there’s no guarantee that its services are free, affordable, or even legitimate. In fact, some credit counseling organizations charge high fees, which may be hidden, or urge consumers to make “voluntary” contributions that can cause more debt.”

As with everything else, in the area of professional debt consolidation help the buyer must beware. This is one service where a face to face relationship is probably important. Seek out a reputable agency that provides counseling services through a local office and you’ll be on your way to both debt consolidation and long term debt relief.
